When it comes to college Lacrosse, there are many great players on the field. Some of the best players have made it to the pros and are a huge influence on the sport. Some of those players are jessie coffield, Thomas Sears, Mikey Powell, and John Grant Jr.
Jessie Coffield, a senior from Massachusetts, is one of the top college lacrosse athletes. She was a state champ in field hockey and lacrosse her junior year and received multiple Division I athletic scholarship offers. She chose Boston College because her parents wanted her to get a solid education. They did not want her to pursue pro lacrosse, but they also liked the campus’s proximity to a large city and its Gothic revival architecture.
After graduation, Coffield began networking with sports media outlets. She sent out her video reels to various companies. One company called her for a sideline reporting job for the New England Revolution, where she did video segments for the team’s website. The job eventually led to work for the Lax Sports Network. Another company contacted Coffield and offered her a job hosting a Daily Fantasy Sports show on their website. That job would broaden the sportsbook company’s digital presence and launch Coffield as a national commercial spokesperson.
John Grant Jr
Among the most decorated college lacrosse players of all time is John Grant Jr. The native of Ontario, Canada, Grant was a two-time All-American at the University of Delaware. He was named the Jack Turnbull Award winner and USILA National Collegiate Player of the Year in 1999. He also set numerous records at the University of Delaware, including a school record of 110 points in his senior year.
One of the reasons Junior is considered one of the best college lacrosse players of all time is because of his remarkable recovery from his severe knee injury in 2008. A series of infections left his family afraid that Junior wouldn’t make it. Junior’s recovery from the injury enabled him to play professionally for the next twelve years.
Thomas Sears, a senior at North Carolina, is one of the top college lacrosse players in the country. As a goalie, he has helped the Tar Heels to two national championships. He is also a three-time All-American. In both 1981 and 1982, he was named the team’s top player and won the C. Markland Kelly Award. In addition, he was named the ACC Player of the Year and earned all-world honors. He has also been inducted into the US Lacrosse Greater Baltimore Chapter Hall of Fame.
As of this writing, Sears is ranked fourth in the Tewaaraton Award’s Watch List. The Watch List includes the best players in each NCAA division. The top five finalists are chosen by a committee of collegiate coaches who also represent the NCAA’s Division I schools.
Mikey Powell is one of the most accomplished players in college lacrosse history. He was a three-time All-American and won the Jack Turnbull Award four times. He also broke many records during his collegiate career. His 42 goals and 41 assists in 2002 were an NCAA Tournament record, and he was a finalist for the Tewaaraton Award.
A former Syracuse player, Powell is one of the best in NCAA history. He won four Jack Turnbull Awards and two W.H. Brine Awards while playing for the Orange. He also played professionally in the NLL and MLL, winning three national championships. He is a member of the US and Canadian Lacrosse Halls of Fame, and he holds the record for most NLL MVPs.
Jim Brown is one of the greatest college lacrosse players of all time. His dominance is legendary and he changed the rules of the game. His submerged shot is a 90-mph skip of the ball off the turf. As a college midfielder, Brown led his team to a perfect 10-0 record and was named to the All-American team twice. Brown was a true all-around player and a great leader.
Lacrosse has come a long way since Jim Brown’s era. Former players like Cornell star Bob Rule and Maryland great Alan Lowe discussed how today’s players are more athletic and powerful than ever. Today’s lacrosse has more advanced sticks, webbing, and patterns. While big players dominate, the game is still fun and challenging for smaller players. Bob Rule said that the beauty of lacrosse is that the players respect each other.
