Fox’s The Masked Singer is a popular television program that first aired on January 2, 2019. The competition features celebrities disguised as costumed personas, who perform musical acts for the amusement of the show’s panelists and audience members. These fabulous alter-egos are chosen by the celebrities themselves, and some of them are highly personal and symbolic for the contestants. Here are 3 of the most surprising unmaskings in the series.
3. Wendy Williams
The host of her namesake talk show sang and danced incognito as a walking, talking pair of giant, ruby lips. Though Wendy had fun, she felt that her colorful ad-libs and recognizable voice had given away her identity before the performance was over. Still, many were surprised to find that a talk show personality had tried her hand at an intensive musical routine.
Her performance on Masked Singer’s fourth season went viral on social media platforms despite her elimination from the contest. Her influence spread most notably on TikTok, where the audio from her debut number, Native New Yorker, became a popular feature of user videos.
2. Caitlyn Jenner
Caitlyn Jenner was the voice behind the Phoenix and the second reveal of Season 5 after she was correctly identified by panelist Jenny McCarthy. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, she disclosed that she had been previously asked to compete on the show and had refused. Then she had a change of heart and participated in the competition, singing Ke$ha’s Tik Tok.
Jenner was eliminated after the show’s audience and panelists Robin Thicke, Nicole Scherzinger, Jenny McCarthy, and Ken Jeong voted on the top performances of the episode. Her performance was at the bottom of the list. In her exit interview for the show, she did not express remorse and spoke favorably about her experience on the show, stating that it was transformative and allowed her to venture outside of her comfort zone.
1. Tony Hawk
Leading up to the big reveal, there was a lot of speculation about the person behind the elephant mask. Tony Hawk was unveiled as the true identity of Season 3’s phenomenal pachyderm, surprising judges and viewers alike.
Hawk told Entertainment Weekly that, even though he had a musical background, he did not expect to last long in the competition when the other contenders were likely to be professional singers. He was surprised when famous music artists Lil Wayne and Chaka Khan were eliminated before he was.
