Under this act, you have the legal right to take 12 weeks of leave within a year to take care of a loved one. But do know that those 12 weeks of leave will be unpaid leaves. You will not get a paycheck for those leaves.

There is a possibility of using your paid leave while you’re on your FMLA leave. You can use paid leave such as sick leaves and vacation leaves. Your employer is not bound by law to allow you to take your paid leave while on FMLA leave.  You may think you can use FMLA for any medical problem, but this is not the case as there are certain circumstances under which you’re allowed to use FMLA leaves. You can use them for serious medical conditions of your own or a family member, for issues related to military deployments or to assist a covered service member, and for childbirth or bonding with a newborn.

 You only get FMLA if your employer has had at least 50 employees for about 20 weeks in the current or previous year, and you must have worked in such a company for at least a year and about 1,250 hours within that year. There are other certain factors involved in getting FMLA certification for family members. William D King asks you to carefully check them before applying for FMLA leaves.
